The design of this brooch is based on a Scottish targe (shield) with decorated panels of intricate Celtic knotwork and interspersed bosses. The reverse is set with a hinged steel pin and is marked ‘JBK’ for J.B. King and ‘SILVER’.
Little is known of J. B. King other than they registered an official maker’s mark at the Glasgow Assay Office, the date of which is unfortunately unrecorded but likely around 1940/50s. Their work is similar in style to the other Glasgow and West Coast silversmiths inspired by the Celtic art and Scottish historical revival. King is a rare maker seldom encountered.
