A Vintage Scottish silver mounted sgian dubh by Thomas K. Ebbutt, Edinburgh, 1960

Sgian dubh displaying a carved wooden Celtic interlace handle with a silver knotwork mount to the base. The pommel is set with an open claw mount enclosing a faceted amber paste (representing a traditional Cairngorm quartz). The steel blade has a scalloped back edge and single fuller. The leather covered wooden scabbard is decorated with deeply cast Celtic knotwork shield-shaped mounts, and the reverse is hallmarked ‘T.E’, Edinburgh, sterling silver, 1960, and stamped ‘MADE IN SCOTLAND’.

Thomas K. Ebbutt is first mentioned in the local directories of Edinburgh in 1899 as a ‘Chaser and Designer’. In 1903 he registered his maker’s mark with the Edinburgh Assay Office and submitted his work for assay from 1904 onwards. In 1912, the trade directory describes his business as ‘Goldsmith etc; regimental and Highland ornament maker’. He died in 1921 but his business continued through his family until 1977 when it was acquired by the Edinburgh firm Hamilton & Inches.
