A Victorian silver Sir Walter Scott commemorative brooch, 1871

A Victorian silver Sir Walter Scott commemorative brooch, 1871

This circular brooch is decorated with a geometric engraved border and has been centrally set with a classical bust of Sir Walter Scott. The reverse has a hinged steel pin and is engraved with a 2nd period Registration Diamond with year code A for 1871, and month code C for January.

This unusual brooch appears to have been designed, registered, and made in 1871 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sir Walter Scott’s birth in 1771. The portrait bust used here is perhaps the most famous and recognisable rendering of Scott. It was originally sculpted in 1820 by Sir Francis Chantrey and subsequently given to Scott in 1828 as a ‘token of esteem’. An 1841 copy can be found in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 993).
