The badge displays a circular belted garter enclosing the engraved motto ‘ROBERE PRUDENTIA PRAESTAT’, translated as ‘Prudence Excels Strength’, while the crest within shows a demi lion rampant holding a sword aloft for clan Young. The reverse has a hinged steel pin and is stamped ‘M&C’ for the makers Medlock & Craik, ‘INVSS’ for Inverness, and hallmarked sterling silver, Edinburgh, 1954.
Medlock & Craik was an Inverness business started by Arthur Medlock who is recorded in 1871 as being a watchmaker and later jeweller. In 1913, Medlock transferred his business to James Craik ‘who will continue to conduct it as hitherto, under the Firm Name and designation of MEDLOCK & CRAIK GOLDMSITHS, JEWELLERS, WATCHMAKERS, ENGRAVERS, AND OPTICIANS’.
