The badge is formed as a belted garter finely engraved with foliate scrolls within geometric border. The centre displays a cast Robertson crest of a hand holding the royal crown. The reverse is set with hinged steel pin. By Peter G. Wilson, Inverness, marked ‘P.G.W’ ‘INS’.

Peter G. Wilson of Inverness was a renowned silversmith and jeweller who appears to have become a specialist maker of Scottish highland dress and traditional wares. Moving from Keith to Inverness around 1865, his clients quickly included Queen Victoria, members of the Royal family, and their guests. He is recorded in the pages of the Inverness Advertiser in 1868 as having been appointed ‘jeweller & goldsmith’ to ‘her Royal Highness and the Prince of Teck’. His work is held in the collection of Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and a detailed biography can be found in Highland Gold & Silversmiths by GP Moss and AD Roe (1999).
