The shield shaped badge displays a crest of an armoured arm holding a sword with a ribboned banner above engraved with the motto ‘VIRTUTI CON JUNCTA FORTUNA’, translated as ‘Fortune Joined to Bravery’. The reverse has a hinged steel pin and is marked ‘MEDLOCK’, ‘INVss’, with a registration number ‘RdNo167830’

Arthur Medlock started his own business in Inverness around 1876. His maker’s mark has been found on various high quality Highland wares, jewellery, and sporting trophies. His name continued under the partnership of Medlock & Craik long after he retired around 1916 and his death in 1930. His work is held in the collection of Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and a detailed biography can be found in Highland Gold & Silversmiths by GP Moss and AD Roe (1999).
