A silver and enamel Art Deco inspired brooch by Pat Cheney, Argyll, hallmarked Edinburgh, c.1980s

This brooch is largely formed of abstract geometrical triangles grouped together to present an elegant modern Art Deco style. The silver body has been set with deep blue, purple and brown enamels. The reverse has a hinged steel pin and scroll safety catch, the maker’s mark ‘PPC’ for Pat Pemberton Cheney, together with Edinburgh hallmarks for sterling silver using the common control mark.

Pat Cheney’s jewellery is inspired by two significant art movements, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Her creativity has won her numerous awards including The Scottish Goldsmiths Design Award in 1984, and her work has been exhibited in several museums including Glasgow Museums, the Metropolitan in New York and the Country Museum of Art in Los Angeles. She began her jewellery business in 1976, relinquishing it to Ortak jewellery in Orkney in 1990.
