This silver belt buckle is made of heavy gauge silver and is beautifully engraved with a scrolling vine decoration to the front and the reverse together with bird head details. This work is reminiscent of his exceptional gun engraving. It has been stamped with the maker’s mark, ‘MA’ for Malcolm Appleby, and Edinburgh hallmarks for sterling silver and the year 1997.
Malcolm Appleby attended the Royal College of Art and was originally an apprentice to a gunsmith where he learnt the art of engraving. In 2014, he was awarded an MBE for his services to Hand Engraving, and the following year was presented with The Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain Lifetime Achievement Award. His work can be found in many important institutions including the London Goldsmiths’ Company, the V&A and the National Museums Scotland.
