This elegant kilt pin has an intertwined knotwork tapered body and is topped with a claw set oval-cut amber citrine (Cairngorm). The reverse pin has a hinged ‘X’ safety clasp unique to Ballater. The main body has been marked on the side with the initials ‘W.J.F’ for William J. Fraser and ‘9ct’.
William J. Fraser was a goldsmith working in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, from the 1920s to 1940. His father-in-law was the famous Royal Deeside goldsmith William Robb whose work is much sought after. Fraser took on the business after Robb’s death along with many of his royal and elite customers. This particular design of kilt pin is credited to Robb.
It is known that William Robb was using locally sourced Cairngorm stones before the area became a protected National Park. The colour and cut of this stone is typically Scottish so it is possible this is a natural Cairngorm from William Robb’s working stock set after his death by his son in law.
