An elegant kilt pin with an intertwined knotwork tapered body, topped with a claw set oval-cut citrine (Cairngorm). The reverse has hinged pin and safety clasp. The main body has been marked on the side with the initials ‘J&C’ for Jamieson & Carry and ‘9ct’.
The kilt pin comes with its original brown leatherette box with gold edging (now faded) and hinged lid. Inscribed to the interior silk lining is ‘HENRY TATTON / MANUFACTURING JEWELLER / 28 & 30 ROSE STREE (EAST) / EDINBURGH’.
It would seem that Jamieson & Carry were the makers, but Henry Tatton was the retailer of this item. This kilt pin continues the Royal Deeside pattern of kilt pin which was originally designed and made by William Robb of Ballater from the late 1890’s.
Jamieson & Carry are a prestigious family run business that have been operating since 1925. In the mid-19th century, they were ‘Jeweller and Silversmith’ to Queen Victoria and ‘Watchmaker’ to her son, the Prince of Wales - https://jamieson-carry.com/.
Henry Tatton established his business on Rose Street, Edinburgh, in 1892, initially as a manufacturing jeweller. He later specialised in the accoutrements worn with Highland dress. In 1935, the company received a commission (probably their most important) to create a banqueting service for King George V and Queen Mary. It was comprised of some 3000 pieces weighing over 18,000 ounces and would cater for 96 guests. The set still resides in the Palace of Holyrood House today.
Condition:
The box shows some wear and tear, including fading in parts, particularly to the gold edging.
