The ring has a row of four, slightly concave, navette-shaped sculptures. The reverse is stamped ‘Georg Jensen’ [slightly worn], ‘STERLING’ for sterling silver, ‘DENMARK’, and ‘..8’, [worn] possibly for design number 98. This ring is unusual because it shows a row of four navette-shaped sculptures instead of two, which design number 98 is associated with. It therefore might have another design number but due to the worn nature of the mark, it is impossible to tell.
Georg Jensen (1866-1935) trained as a goldsmith and sculptor before establishing his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1904. He was influenced by nature and form, and his business (named after him) created highly original jewellery and silverware, which in turn pioneered 20th century Scandinavian design. The company continues to exist and is still internationally recognised today.
Arno Malinowski (1899-1976) was a Danish sculptor and designer who worked in a variety of materials. He was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, subsequently joining the Georg Jensen silver firm in 1936, where he produced a variety of distinctive jewellery, often Art Deco in style, as well as other wares.
