Modernist silver brooch by Georg Jensen, 1972, designed by Henning Koppel, Denmark

Modernist silver brooch by Georg Jensen, 1972, designed by Henning Koppel, Denmark

A silver brooch of pierced abstract form, the reverse marked  ‘GEORG JENSEN’, ‘DENMARK’, ‘369’, ‘925 S’ for sterling silver, together with London import marks for sterling silver and 1972. It has a hinged pin and C-scroll safety clasp.

Georg Jensen (1866-1935) trained as a goldsmith and sculptor before establishing his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1904. He was influenced by nature and form, and his business (named after him) created highly original jewellery and silverware, which in turn pioneered 20th century Scandinavian design. The company continues to exist and is still internationally recognised today.

Henning Koppel (1918-1981) was a significant 20th century Danish sculptor and designer who joined Georg Jensen in 1945, a collaboration that lasted the rest of his career. His silverwork is famous for its abstract and sculptural qualities which won him many awards.
