A silver and pearl Art Nouveau inspired brooch by Malcolm Grey, Orkney, c.1990s, possibly designed by Pat Cheney, Argyll

An elegant silver Art Nouveau inspired brooch in the form of an abstract lily set with a tiny seed pearl. The reverse has a hinged steel pin and scroll safety catch, the maker’s mark ‘MG’ for Malcolm Grey, together with the stamp ‘925’ for sterling silver.

The Orcadian jewellery maker Malcolm Gray first registered his maker’s punch with the Edinburgh Assay Office in 1968. The following year, he established Ortak Silvercraft which subsequently become one of Orkney’s most iconic jewellery brands alongside Shiela Fleet, Ola Gorie and Aurora, as well as one of the UK’s leading jewellery manufacturers.

Pat Cheney’s jewellery is inspired by two significant art movements, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. She began her jewellery business in 1976, relinquishing it to Malcolm Grey’s Ortak jewellery in Orkney in 1990.
