This petit, antique, silver bookmark takes the form of a cross at the top which has been engraved with Celtic knotwork. The main body has been engraved in script with ‘3.9.20 Ballater 25.9.20’ and stamped with the maker’s mark, ‘W.R’ for William Robb, his local ‘town’ mark ‘BLTR’ and hallmarks for sterling silver, Edinburgh, 1919.
William Robb was a Royal Deeside goldsmith patronised by Queen Victoria, her family, and many of the royal guests who visited Balmoral. His work focuses on Celtic and historical revival along with fine quality souvenirs which he provided for this popular Victorian tourist spot. He was awarded a Royal Warrant and in 1904 was famously commissioned by King Edward VII to make 25 sets of uniform accessories for the Balmoral Highlanders including dirks, sgian dubhs, sporrans etc.
